What all the fuss? MCT Oil Coffee explained + recipe.
If you haven’t heard of a MCT coffee / bulletproof coffee by now, let me introduce you. Made with black coffee, MCT oil and butter, the hot drink helps curb cravings, improves cognitive function, strengthens the gut and provides energy to fuel your workout. The first time I tried it, I got a real buzz putting me on the greatest high!
MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides, a type of fat found in foods such as coconut. In comparison to longer-chain fatty acids, MCTs are more readily absorbed and used for energy by the body, It is calorie dense (~125 calories/tablespoon), yet zero carbs making it a great as a tool if fasting until mid morning as it won’t raise your blood glucose levels. MCTs can be purchased from your local health food store or online, in liquid or powder forms. You don’t need to know much more than that!
So how do you use it?
1) Start off your day with an MCT oil coffee. Start with 1 teaspoon of MCT and work your way up to 1 tablespoon. It can initially cause digestive upset, something I experienced first hand.
2 )MCT oil is odourless and tasteless so you can drizzle it over your salads or add into your smoothie.
Give my MCT oil coffee recipe a go. The super buttery flavour might take time to getting used to, but you’ll be hooked in now time.
-1 ½ cups black coffee (1 ½ cups boiling water + 1 tablespoon dried coffee)
-1 teaspoon MCT oil
-1 teaspoon grass fed butter or ghee
-Prepare a black coffee.
-Add the black coffee, MCT and butter or ghee into your blender.
-Blend until there is a foamy layer on top.
-Serve and enjoy.
